What the LSI measures
Dr. Wilfred Langelier built the index in 1936 to protect drinking water infrastructure from corrosion by working out the saturation equilibrium of calcium carbonate. Pools came later. It's the same index used in drinking water, wastewater, irrigation, and aquariums. Pool service borrowed it.
What makes it useful is that it ignores your readings individually. Water doesn't care about its pH on its own, or its calcium on its own. It responds to every condition at once, and the LSI is one number for all of it.
The sugar analogy is the one that sticks. Stir sugar into a glass and it dissolves, and dissolves, and then it stops and the rest sits on the bottom. Calcium carbonate does the same thing in a pool. Past that point you get scale, or you get flakes.
Predictable water is profitable water
Techs do the same thing week after week and feel like the water keeps moving on them. Eric Knight of Orenda turns that around: we're the variable, not the water. Water does the same thing, the same way, every time.
So treat the pool based on where the water is going, the way a quarterback throws to where the receiver will be. Techs who balance to their pH ceiling find pool care gets easier and more profitable, with fewer moving parts, because they know where the water is headed and it's guaranteed to go there.
What unbalanced water does to equipment
Problems show up on the customer's equipment first and on your schedule second, as callbacks.
Run high and you get scale. It appears in the hottest spots first: heat exchanger, salt cell, sunny tile line, spa, spillway. Almost everything dissolves better in hot water except calcium. Salt cells calcify, then fracture off flakes that look like eggshells drifting through the water. Scale in a heater won't kill it, but it cuts efficiency, raises pressure, and enough of it causes real problems.
Run low and the water goes aggressive. Corrosion has more than one cause, but a low LSI means the parameters are corrosive by definition. Three habits prevent most of it: no tabs in skimmers, no column-pouring acid, no overdosing or skipping dilution.
Follow the colors instead of doing the math
Worth saying plainly, because LSI has a reputation for being intimidating: almost no tech ever touches the equation.
Equilibrium is 0.0, and anywhere from -0.3 to +0.3 is fine. In the field the job is simpler than that. Stay yellow or green year-round. Purple means oversaturated with scale coming; red means undersaturated and starved for calcium carbonate.
