Why pool pros should increase pricing in 2026

The data is clear: costs are up, margins are under pressure, and the pros who are growing are the ones pricing with intention.

According to the 2026 State of the Pool Industry Report:

Most operators are already raising rates — are you? In 2025, 68% of pool service businesses raised their prices. In 2026, that number climbs to 77%. The share of operators planning no increase dropped from 33% to 23%. Incremental, annual increases have become standard practice across the industry.

Cost pressures aren't going away. Roughly 40% of operators rank economic conditions as their #1 pricing concern. Nearly half (47%) expect tariff-driven cost increases in 2026, and 18% expect those increases to be significant. Chemical and material costs remain a leading pressure point — and flat pricing without cost visibility is a direct path to margin erosion.

The industry is shifting away from all-inclusive pricing. Only 45% of operators still bundle chemicals into their monthly rate. The remaining 55% are billing chemicals separately or using a hybrid model — a structural shift that reflects a growing awareness that passing through high-consumption inputs like chlorine tabs, shock, and specialty chemicals is both common and accepted. Among operators billing separately or using hybrid models, 77% charge for specialty chemicals and 73% charge for chlorine tabs.

The typical increase is modest — and that's the point. Most operators raising prices in 2026 are doing so by 10% or less. Large jumps are rare (only 3% plan to raise by 21% or more). Small, predictable annual increases protect your margins without triggering customer churn. Waiting until you're forced into a large correction is the riskier move.

The market supports higher rates. The average monthly cleaning rate in 2026 is $225/month. 64% of pool service businesses expect higher revenue this year, and 84% anticipate bringing in more overall than in 2025. Pricing power exists — but only if you're willing to use it.

Business costs are rising regardless. People, salaries, and benefits now account for 35% of the average pool service budget. Business-related expenses have risen sharply to 24%. Margins don't improve by accident — they improve when your pricing reflects your actual cost to serve.
